Half Price Beer Week Highlights Outdated Massachusetts Liquor Laws

The Double Bull Taphouse finds creative workaround to bring value and fun to guests

Peabody, MA — From February 2 – 8, The Double Bull Taphouse is hosting a Half Price Beer Week, offering guests 50% off all beers for seven straight days, not as a loophole, but as a workaround to Massachusetts’ long-standing prohibition on happy hour and time-based alcohol discounts.

While many states allow restaurants to offer limited-hour promotions on alcoholic beverages, Massachusetts law continues to restrict establishments from offering traditional happy hours or short-term beer discounts. As a result, restaurants looking to offer value-driven promotions must get creative, sometimes in surprising ways.

“We love creating fun, welcoming experiences for our guests,” said Josh Webber, owner of The Double Bull. “But Massachusetts liquor laws make it difficult to do something as simple as offering a happy hour after work. Hosting a full-week promotion is one of the only ways we can legally provide the kind of value that customers in most other states already enjoy.”

The Half Price Beer Week promotion is fully compliant with state regulations and is designed to give guests a reason to gather, linger, and explore The Double Bull’s extensive beer selection; something the team believes should be encouraged, not restricted.

“These laws were written decades ago, and the hospitality landscape has changed dramatically since then,” Webber added. “Restaurants today are focused on community, responsible service, and transparency. Allowing limited-hour discounts wouldn’t undermine those goals, it would support them.”

The Double Bull hopes the promotion sparks conversation among lawmakers, industry professionals, and the public about whether Massachusetts’ alcohol regulations still reflect the realities of modern dining and social culture.

Half-Price Beer Week runs February 2 – 8 at The Double Bull Taphouse.

Captain Max – An Exclusive Brew by Webber Restaurant Group

We are excited to announce a collab with one of our favorite local breweries, Channel Marker, to create a New England style IPA brewed exclusively for Webber Restaurant Group restaurants.  After months of recipe testing, tasting, and refining with a team of WRG beer lovers, the launch of Captain Max is upon us and you can grab a pint at Gibbet Hill Grill, Scarlet Oak Tavern, The Bancroft, and The Double Bull.

Captain Max is a New England style hazy IPA that features Citra, Mosaic and Cashmere hops. These hops drive forward flavors and aromas of freshly peeled oranges, clementines, and a subtle hint of passionfruit.

Channel Marker is a small batch brewery located on Rantoul Street in Beverly that specializes in IPAs and Sours.  They were voted one of The Top 10 New Breweries in 2020 by USA Today, and are well known for having some of the best IPAs around.  Channel Marker has very limited distribution, but our taphouse in Peabody, MA, The Double Bull, has been carrying their limited release beers regularly since opening.

Join us on April 9, at The Double Bull in Peabody, MA, for the launch of Captain Max!  Channel Marker will take over the taps at Double Bull’s upstairs bar, with a selection of their small batch brews, from 6:00pm-9:30pm.  Reps will be on hand to talk about their beers and the process we used to develop our exclusive brew. And to really get the party going, Local 28 will begin playing live music at 8:45.
